Happy Valentines Day Frens,
Well, Bored Ape Yacht Club wasn’t part of the Superbowl halftime show, Coinbase NFT didn’t launch during the commercials, Budweiser and Pepsi didn’t convert mainstream ‘merica to the NFT loving mob we belong to – but still, seeing all the crypto & NFT references during the big game was fun, right? I mean, yeah, it would have been cool if Snoop had doxxed himself as Cozomo d’Medici or if a bunch of Bored Apes had run onto the field, but it was still pretty cool right? (Unless you’re a Bengals fan). As we get closer to a year into this NFT madness – it feels like it’s been ten years – or at least five. It was less than a year ago that the SNL did their NFT sketch – and less than a year that nearly all NFT projects have been around. Good to keep in mind – we are so fucking early.
And yet, the space has changed. Where last year it was artists and devs connecting over shared love of code, aesthetics, and design – this year it is more like – scammers and finance bros pumping out project after project to get your money. Good projects still exist, but they’re much harder to find. In a chat yesterday, I compared it to California for gold prospectors in 1848 (last year) and 1868 – the difference being that all the easy gold has been picked up and now you are more likely to get robbed than strike it rich.

These are projects that I wanted to believe in that simply seem like they are dead. I bought into many of these instead of the winning projects above. Take that as a warning. I sincerely hope that they resurrect – but when I put them here, it means that I’ve stopped believing and looking. I hope to someday have a section at the top called ‘Resurrections’ for when projects in the Graveyard manage to rise up again. As time goes on, I have no doubt this will be the biggest section of this newsletter and I will let it keep growing so that those who care to look can understand that the majority of projects fail and investors lose money.
