GM and Aloha Frens,

As many of you have probably figured out by this point, the Vagobond Morning Briefing is more than just an email or website – what I’m building is actually an NFT Magazine. The last few weeks I’ve been putting the various beats (Mon – Literature, Wed – Music, Thurs – Travel & Food, Aloha Friday) as individual NFTs. While this has worked to some extent, it has been more of an experiment towards putting it all together. A weekly NFT magazine that has all the sections and more is what we are heading towards. We’re getting there frens. Our staff writers are becoming more like editorial leads and we are gathering steam and moving forward. Thanks for being on this evolving journey with me and with us. We have a big week ahead of us. LFG!

The big news today is obviously BAYC having their social media hacked and a fake link sent out to excited minters who thought they were getting an early deal on the upcoming land sale. My heart goes out to those who lost – there will be no recovery from this, that doesn’t work in this space. Frens, please – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always – double check the discord, the official links, and with a friend or two. Be safe out there.

This week: “Blockchains and Coins”

In terms of blockchains, there are So. Many. Blockchains…

There are thousands of blockchains, and NFT book development is already taking place on several of them, although none are fully deployed yet. SolType is on Solana. Readl is on MoonRiver. Others are minting to Ethereum or Polygon. But it’s still early and there’s no telling yet which chains will become our thriving book chains for Forever Books.

I like Ethereum long-term because it has the highest volume of activity, but Solana, Avalanche, Cardano, Polkadot, and Terra are all growing fast with competing communities that will likely also offer book publishing opportunities.

Ethereum is evolving to become a better solution than it presently is. This year’s “Merge” should cut electricity consumption by over 99%, followed by a “Surge” that will add capacity and reduce bottlenecks, followed by a “Verge” that should decrease transaction costs. Then a “Purge” will get rid of some legacy code to streamline the process and a “Splurge” will add new features. I am not kidding, Ethereum actually does have a rhyming roadmap. Will Ethereum evolve fast enough to fend off a growing number of viable competitors? Only time will tell.

Many chains are EVM-compatible, which means they run Ethereum code in a Virtual Machine, which means that any program (or dApp) developed on Ethereum can be ported over with minimal fuss. Other chains have protocols that include more features or make them easier to use. In the long run, it’s possible that Solana or Cosmos may overcome Ethereum’s limitations or offer cool new features that really set them apart.

I put our first NFT Bookstore on Polygon because it’s an Ethereum-adjacent blockchain that’s energy-efficient and has low gas fees–with gas fees being the costs of conducting a transaction on-chain. Ethereum is in the process of moving to a more environmentally safe mechanism later this year, so we’ll be adding an Ethereum bookstore after that. Down the road, there will be more blockchains added.

It may be that in the long run, the best solution may be an ecosystem of different blockchains that are compatible with each other but offer different feature sets for different purposes. It’s early. The space is evolving. We’re encouraging a Web3 Go Wide strategy–use every publisher, blockchain, and marketplace you can and see what ends up working best. As far as I know, none of the publishers in this space are demanding exclusivity.

In terms of coins,

I’d look for liquidity, stability, and environmental impact. For me, cryptocurrency should not be relied upon as an investment. I go against the grain in that, but I collect only the coins I need and only in the quantities necessary to conduct transactions on the blockchain. A coin that’s likely to go “to the moon” or equally likely to crash to zero is not going to be useful for pricing books.

I set up the NFT Bookstore on Polygon so that booksellers can choose to price their items in:

  • $MATIC, which is the native coin of the Polygon blockchain;
  • $WETH, which is a form of Ethereum that’s been “wrapped” for use on the Polygon blockchain;
  • $USDC, which is pegged to the US Dollar for offerings that won’t fluctuate as much against fiat currency;
  • $PAGE, which is the social coin of the PageDAO author guild; and
  • $N1, which is a marketplace-specific token.

Currently, items priced in $MATIC in the NFT Bookstore can be purchased directly with credit/debit cards, which is a huge advantage over the other choices.

Listings are not an endorsement of books or services.

Why Content Creators Need Web3

A must-read article by Rae Wojcik and Stephen Poynter about how NFTs have the ability to disrupt everything we know about content creation, and can pave the way for content creators of all kinds to take back control of their work and usher in a new era of creativity online.

So much of this echoes my own thoughts on what content creators should be thinking about, and how to see through the hype of Web3 to the genuine potential and utility of the underlying technology.

Soak it in: https://northernwords.blog/2022/04/11/why-content-creators-need-web3/

The Week in PageDao by T. Dylan Daniel

dylan.app.bio

Greetings everyone. This is Dylan from PageDAO, happy to announce that I’m joining forces with CD Vagobond to provide some weekly snippets and even the occasional alpha drop. We’re going to keep these pretty short, though, so expect tons of links like the one above that goes to my app.bio, which I think is pretty neat.

I minted three new NFTBooks yesterday, and talked about doing some reprints from the Genesis days. I think Robbie (indefatigueable.eth) is interested in doing some of that too, and all the authors of the original tokens should probably consider it with each subsequent new PageDAO tech stack. Which leads me to this week’s alpha bomb:

We’re happy enough with the NFTBooks’ speed and quality to release them to the world, with a pair of minter dAPPs, one already on Polygon and a second to be deployed to Evmos as soon as possible.

We’ll be doing 2 runs of Member NFTs for 2022 as well, reducing the price for each to .025ETH to ease the old pocketbook while also making membership access attainable and affordable. If we sell all of the passes (20k in total) we’ll have raised something like $1.5 million in $ETH!

Still, what’s really important is getting access to the minter provided to everyone in our community as soon as humanly possible. We’ll be continually updating this technology over the next few months, assuming there are enough sales to spin up our development team full-time, and we do have a special edition membership NFT for everyone who qualified for the airdrop under the terms listed in the Snapshot Proposal. We’ll be doing the snapshot soon!

Shortly after that, we’ll send everyone who qualifies a Wippy Edition 2022 Membership NFT. The function is the same as the standard PageDAO Membership NFT, but you’ll know team and community go back when you see one of these in someone’s wallet.

As if that wasn’t enough, we’re also releasing a premium Diamond Wippy Edition for those who support PageDAO and want to buy something exclusive and expensive from us. We’ll be selling 13 of these on Polygon, and 13 more on Evmos. List price will be 2.5ETH per token, making these perhaps the hottest PageDAO fundraising item on the market today. Purchasing one of these, or a pair of them, will guarantee the purchaser a special Diamond Wippy role in the buildout of the PageDAO NFTBooks and marketplaces.

Diamond Wippy members receive access to future technologies and will be the first to know about whitelisting for further PageDAO NFTs and of course NFTBooks. As the most generous PageDAO supporter, you’ll also receive a special role in the Discord server if you verify ownership of your NFT via collab.land.

Like I said, there was a lot this week!

We still don’t have an exact date, but follow @page_dao on Twitter and join us on the PageDao Discord if you want to be kept in the loop.

Vagobond’s Recent NFT Acquisitions

I’m not minting anything these days unless it’s either free and gasless or an essential part of a collection I already hold. I feel like pfps and generative 10k collections have come as far as they can and now it’s the established winners in this space that will give us something new. Possibly like what BAYC is doing with $APE or BYO is doing with their universe. I don’t know – but I’m watching for it and looking for opportunities to either take profits or increase my stake in projects that I think might bring about the next wave of innovation. At this point, it’s safe to assume that every new project is either a rug or a future failure. There are just too many unknowns and too many scams. Blue chip projects and solid teams are the safest bet – but even something like BAYC has an uncertain future in a space that has only developed over the past year.

News & Alpha

* ALPHA * – The Vagobond Discord is one of the best free alpha servers around. You might see it in this briefing, but you’ll definitely see it in the Alpha channel of our discord first.

  • BAYC/MAYC will have free claim and the NFTs in the promo video will have an automatic WL. As with most things YL, little is actually known for certain but the Discord and Website for Otherside launched.

  • OpenSea has acquired Gem.xyz

  • Tom Bileyu’s Impact Theory is doing a generative avatar project Kyzen – watch for drops and free claims on Twitter.

The First NFT/Metaverse Religion- Bald Jesusism

April Holidays

Ramadan continues and I have to admit, I haven’t been fasting the whole time. A combination of travel, illness, and life events have impeded my willingness to fast – so I may be to blame for no free money drops so far in April. The Full Moon Holiday took place on April 16th and our Christian Frens had Easter yesterday! Now, don’t get confused between Bald Jesus and the Christian Jesus – not the same dude but just like we love the Ramadan fast in BJism, we also love the idea of renewal, rebirth, and saving the entire world. The Bald Jesus Drinking Club continues to mint – so make sure you grab one.

The holidays of Bald Jesusism are meant to be fun and healthy for you and your fam. Enjoy them!

Art Heads – I won a free mint of this project, so I’m watching for the mint.

Evmos Punks – The failure of the Evmos Chain the first go around is not promising – but since they learn as they go – this is still a great project to be watching for iteration and innovation.

Great Projects I’m Not In or Following:

aka projects I missed and am salty about. There are too many – see the whole list at:

https://vagobond.com/nft-101/great-nft-projects-ive-missed/

Missed in April: Moon Birds, Murakami Flowers, Seeds – and so much more. I’m in full JOMO ‘Joy of Missing Out’ mode.

Tokens & Staking

These are the tokens and crypto/defi projects that NFTs have led me to. Bizarre when you think about it. See the full list at here

These are projects that I wanted to believe in that simply seem like they are dead. I bought into many of these instead of the winning projects above. Take that as a warning. I sincerely hope that they resurrect – but when I put them here, it means that I’ve stopped believing and looking. I hope to someday have a section at the top called ‘Resurrections’ for when projects in the Graveyard manage to rise up again. As time goes on, I have no doubt this will be the biggest section of this newsletter and I will let it keep growing so that those who care to look can understand that the majority of projects fail and investors lose money. Pick wisely, my friends, and good luck!

Newly Buried: These aren’t dead projects but projects I’ve lost hope in exiting profitably. I’m not selling any of these but am tired of watching them fail to deliver. I hope they all resurrect and prove me wrong.
